NSIOL Portal Privacy Notice
Updated May 2025
Nova Scotia Independent Online Learning (NSIOL) is a program managed by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD).
NSIOL collects information about its users in the NSIOL Portal to make sure that the right people get access to the right information in an easy and secure way so we can all support our students in their learning.
Some information about Students and their Parents/Guardians comes from PowerSchool when the student is registered for an NSIOL course by their NSIOL School Contact. This information gets checked with PowerSchool nightly to make sure it is up to date.
Some information comes from Course Mentors who enter grades and attendance information for their students.
Some information, like adding accounts for Adults Who Care, is entered manually by School Contacts. Adults Who Care are additional adults who support our students in their learning, like tutors, coaches, other family members, community elders, etc. They need permission from Parents/Guardians to be added to the NSIOL Portal to access student information.
School Contacts, Parents/Guardians, and Adults Who Care can only access information about their own students.
People who work for NSIOL, like Program Administrators and Course Mentors, have access to the information in the NSIOL Portal to support students, their associated adults, and their schools, and to manage the program.
Certain staff members of JIC Design in Ontario have access to the information in the NSIOL Portal, which they created, to make sure it is working correctly and securely and to update it from time to time.
All users of the NSIOL Portal only get access to the information that they need to do their jobs, do their learning, or to support their students’ learning.
Basic information identifying students and their course completion information will kept securely by NSIOL for 50 years in case the student needs confirmation of their NSIOL course completion in the future.
If you notice any errors or need to update your information in the NSIOL Portal, please see the NSIOL Information Correction Guide for next steps.
